Is iLovePDF Safe? What Happens to Your Files

October 7, 2026

iLovePDF is one of the most popular PDF sites in the world, and "is iLovePDF safe?" is a fair question to ask before you upload a payslip, a contract or a scan of your passport. The short answer: for everyday documents, yes — it's an established company with reasonable published policies. For documents you're obliged to keep confidential, the safer choice is a tool that never uploads your file at all. Here's why, based on what iLovePDF itself says.

What iLovePDF says happens to your files

Everything below comes from iLovePDF's own privacy policy and security page, as of October 2026:

  • Who runs it: iLovePDF S.L., a company registered in Barcelona, Spain.
  • How long files are kept: files are deleted within two hours of being processed. The exception is iLoveSign (its e-signature service), which has its own storage terms.
  • Where they're processed: within the European Economic Area as a general rule, although iLovePDF says it may process data closer to your location if you're outside the EEA.
  • Security: files travel over HTTPS, and iLovePDF states it holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification and complies with GDPR.
  • Access and AI: iLovePDF says it won't access or review your content except as needed to provide the service, and doesn't use your files to train AI models.

That's a solid set of commitments, better than many smaller sites that publish nothing at all.

Is iLovePDF safe for sensitive documents?

For sensitive documents — bank statements, payslips, ID scans — the policies above are reasonable, but uploading still carries risks no policy can remove:

  • A copy exists on someone else's server. For up to two hours, your document sits on infrastructure you don't control. A breach, a misconfiguration or a legal request during that window would expose it.
  • You can't verify deletion. "Deleted within two hours" is a promise, not something you can check.
  • The risk lasts as long as the window. If you process the same kind of document every month, you take that small risk every month.

None of this means iLovePDF is careless. It's the nature of any service that processes your file on its servers. Whether that's acceptable depends on the document: a utility bill, probably yes; a full set of KYC documents for a loan, think twice.

Is iLovePDF safe for confidential documents?

For confidential documents — anything under an NDA, privileged legal material, patient records, client data — the question changes. It's no longer "is iLovePDF trustworthy?" but "am I allowed to give this file to a third party at all?" Many NDAs, employer IT policies and professional rules forbid uploading confidential material to unapproved services, however reputable. Healthcare data in the US, for example, generally can't be shared with a service that hasn't signed a business associate agreement. If you're unsure whether you're allowed to upload a file, don't — use a tool that keeps it on your device.

The iLovePDF privacy concerns people raise

The privacy concerns that come up most often are less about wrongdoing and more about the model itself:

  • "Two hours" is still storage. Short, but not zero.
  • Signed-in features keep files longer. E-signature and account features follow different terms from the free one-off tools.
  • Trust you can't audit. Certifications and policies help, but you're relying on them rather than seeing what happens to your file.

Ways to do the same job without uploading

  • iLovePDF Desktop. iLovePDF offers desktop apps for Windows and Mac that process files on your computer. The free tier is a PDF reader; the PDF tools come with a paid subscription.
  • A tool that runs in your browser. Handybin processes files inside your browser tab, so nothing is uploaded. Merge PDF, Compress PDF, Split PDF and Redact PDF all work this way, free, with no account.

How to check any PDF tool yourself

You don't have to take anyone's word for it — including ours. Open your browser's developer tools (F12, or right-click → Inspect), switch to the Network tab, then select your file in the tool. If you see a large request going out to a server as you do it, the tool uploads. A tool that processes locally sends nothing. More on this in Are Online PDF Tools Safe to Use?
