How to Redact a Bank Statement PDF (Free, Without Uploading It)

October 9, 2026

Landlords, visa offices, employers and lenders all ask for bank statements, but rarely need everything on them. Here's how to redact a bank statement PDF properly — so the hidden details are actually gone — without uploading your statement anywhere.

First: check whether you're allowed to redact

Before you black anything out, ask the person requesting the statement. Many mortgage lenders and visa offices require complete, unaltered statements and may reject or question a redacted one. Others, like a landlord checking your income, are usually happy for you to hide what they don't need. If in doubt, ask what they need to see.

What to redact, and what to leave visible

Usually leave visible:

  • your name and address (that's what proves the statement is yours)
  • the bank's name and logo
  • the statement period
  • the balances or the specific transactions the recipient asked about

Usually redact:

  • all but the last four digits of your account number and any card numbers
  • customer ID numbers or reference codes
  • transactions that are irrelevant to the request (only if the recipient agreed)

How to redact a bank statement PDF, free

  1. Unlock it if it's password-protected. Most banks protect emailed statements. Remove the password first with Remove Password, which runs in your browser — you'll need the password your bank gave you.
  2. Open Redact PDF and drop in the statement.
  3. Drag a box over each detail you want removed. Go through every page — account numbers usually repeat in headers and footers.
  4. Click Redact & Download.

Handybin's redaction is real: each page is rebuilt as an image with the boxes baked in, so the original text underneath no longer exists in the file. Nothing is uploaded at any point. The trade-off is that the text in the redacted file can no longer be selected or searched.

Check that the redaction really worked

A common mistake is drawing black rectangles in an ordinary PDF editor or highlighter. That only covers the text — anyone can copy it out from underneath. Always test the result:

  1. Open the redacted file, select all text (Ctrl+A or ⌘A) and copy it into a note. Nothing from the redacted areas should appear.
  2. Search the PDF (Ctrl+F) for the account number. It shouldn't be found.

Don't forget the hidden details

A statement downloaded from online banking can carry metadata — the software that produced it, sometimes names or reference IDs. Run the final file through the Privacy Risk Scanner to see and strip anything hidden.

FAQ

Can I redact a bank statement PDF for free? Yes. Redact PDF is free, has no sign-up or watermark, and works in your browser without uploading the statement.

Will the bank or lender accept a redacted statement? It depends on who's asking. Many mortgage lenders and visa offices need the full statement; ask before you redact.

Can someone undo the redaction? Not with Handybin: the covered content is removed from the file, not hidden. Run the copy-and-search check above to confirm.

Is it safe to upload my bank statement to an online redaction tool? Uploading means a copy passes through someone else's server. Redacting in your browser avoids that entirely — see Are Online PDF Tools Safe to Use?
