How to Merge PDFs on a Mac (Finder, Preview, or Without Preview)

Can a Mac combine PDFs without extra software? Yes. macOS has two built-in ways, Finder's Create PDF and Preview, and both are free. They also each have a catch that trips people up. Here's how all three methods work, including a browser option, and which to use when.
Method 1: Finder's "Create PDF" (fastest)
- In Finder, select the PDFs you want to combine. Click them in the order you want them while holding ⌘ Command, because the new PDF uses the order you selected them in.
- Control-click (or right-click) one of the selected files.
- Choose Quick Actions › Create PDF.
A new PDF appears in the same folder, named after the first file you selected. Your originals are untouched. You can also click Create PDF at the bottom of the Preview pane (View › Show Preview if it's hidden).
The catch: you can't see or adjust the order before it's made. If it comes out wrong, delete the new file and select again in the right order.
Method 2: Preview (most control)
Preview lets you drag pages around, take only some pages from a file, and see everything as you go:
- Duplicate your main PDF first: open it, then choose File › Duplicate. This matters because Preview saves changes automatically. If you edit the original, you'll overwrite it.
- In the duplicate, choose View › Thumbnails so pages show in the sidebar.
- Drag the other PDF's file icon from Finder into the sidebar, onto the spot between pages where it should go. To take only certain pages, open the second PDF too, show its thumbnails, and drag just those pages across (⌘-click to pick several).
- Drag thumbnails up or down to fine-tune the order.
- Choose File › Export as PDF to save a clean copy with a new name.
Mistakes that catch people out in Preview:
- Dropping in the wrong place. Drop into the thumbnail sidebar, on the gap between two thumbnails or below the last page. Dropping into the main page area doesn't insert pages.
- Forgetting to duplicate first. If you already changed the original, File › Revert To › Browse All Versions can get the old version back.
- Password-protected PDFs. Preview asks for the password when you open a locked file. If combining gives you trouble, unlock the files first with Remove Password.
Method 3: A browser tool (works on any Mac, no surprises)
If you just want a list of files you can reorder and a clean merged copy, use Merge PDF in Safari, Chrome or Firefox:
- Open Merge PDF and drag your PDFs onto the drop area (or click it to choose them).
- Use the up and down arrows to set the order.
- Click Merge. The combined file downloads as
merged.pdfto your Downloads folder.
Your originals are never modified, and nothing is uploaded: the merge runs inside your browser. This is handy on a work Mac where you'd rather not touch the original files, or when you're helping someone over the phone and want the same steps on every computer.
