What Does Flattening a PDF Mean? (And When to Do It)

October 18, 2026

"Please flatten the PDF before you send it." If someone has asked you this, they want the filled-in form turned into a version where the answers can't be changed. Here's what that means and how to do it.

What flattening a PDF means

A fillable PDF form has two layers: the page itself, and interactive fields on top of it (text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns) that hold your answers. Those answers stay editable. Anyone who opens the file can click into a field and change what's there.

Flattening merges the field values into the page. After flattening, your answers are part of the page like any printed text. The fields are gone, so there's nothing left to click into or edit.

In short:

Before flattening After flattening
Answers visible Yes Yes
Answers editable Yes, by anyone No
Fields clickable Yes No, they're plain page content
Looks the same in every PDF app Not always Yes

When you should flatten a PDF

  • Before submitting a completed form, so nobody can change your answers after you've sent it.
  • When a form shows blank fields on someone else's device. Some apps, especially on phones, don't display field values reliably. Flattened answers are ordinary page content, so they show up everywhere.
  • Before printing, so every answer prints the way it looks on screen.
  • When a portal asks for a "non-editable" or "uneditable" PDF.

How to flatten a PDF

  1. Fill in the form, for example with Fill PDF Form.
  2. Open Flatten PDF and drop in the filled file.
  3. Click Flatten PDF. The flattened copy downloads with -flattened added to its name.

It runs in your browser, so a form full of personal details isn't uploaded anywhere.

What flattening doesn't do

It's permanent. You can't un-flatten a PDF. Keep the original if you might need to edit the answers again.

It only affects form fields. If the PDF has no fillable fields, flattening changes nothing and the file downloads as-is.

It doesn't password-protect the file. A flattened PDF can't be edited by clicking into fields, but anyone can still open it, and someone with a full PDF editor can still change page content. To control who can open the file, add a password.

It won't work on a password-protected PDF. Remove the password first, flatten, then re-protect it if you need to.

FAQ

Is flattening a PDF the same as making it read-only? Close, but not quite. Flattening removes the editable fields, which is what most people mean by "read-only". It doesn't stop someone with a full PDF editor from changing the page, and it doesn't stop anyone opening the file.

Does flattening reduce file size? Usually only slightly. To make the file noticeably smaller, use Compress PDF.

Will the text still be selectable after flattening? Yes. The answers become normal page text, so you can still select and copy them.

Does flattening affect signatures? A signature added with Sign PDF is already drawn onto the page, so it stays exactly as it is.
